Wheeler's 35,000 acres are home to the largest wintering duck population in Alabama.

This year is Wheeler's 75th anniversary. It started as an experiment by FDR in the farmlands flooded by the damming of the Tennessee River when TVA brought flood control and electricity to North Alabama.

Activities are planned for the entire year to celebrate Wheeler's 75th Anniversary.

Of the 599 Whooping Cranes alive in the wild 13 make their winter home at Wheeler.

This year marks Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge's 75th Anniversary and the refuge have events planned all year long to celebrate the land and the creatures who make their home there.

At the site in Decatur, visitors can see thousands of different water fowl and this weekend they celebrate the Festival of the Cranes featuring their winter guests: 11,000 Sand Hill Cranes and one of the rarest sights in the wild today, the whooping crane.
