Wallace State celebrates 47th commencement

Wallace State celebrates 47th commencement

HANCEVILLE, Ala.—Wallace State Community College in Hanceville and President Vicki Hawsey conferred degrees upon approximately 1,000 graduates during Wallace State’s 47th commencement ceremony at Tom Drake Coliseum Friday.  More than 500 participated in the ceremony.

“Graduates, as you conclude this phase of your life’s journey and embark upon the next, we congratulate you and honor each of you tonight for all that you have achieved,” Dr. Hawsey told the Class of 2013.

Hawsey encouraged the group to claim “a life of significance” as defined by John Maxwell. “Success is when we add value to ourselves – through education, achievements, a great job, possessions we acquire, a nice bank account.  Significance, on the other hand, is when we add value to others,” she said. “I challenge you to channel your calling toward adding value to others through your unique ability to serve.”

High schools visiting campus were Vinemont, Hanceville, Cold Springs, J.B. Pennington, Hayden and Locust Fork.

Through a survey administered at the respective high schools, students selected the technical program they’re interested in and spent a couple of hours at Wallace State learning more about the skills and requirements associated with their possible career choice. MONTGOMERY, AL - Community leaders in four Alabama cities will sample local barbecue sauces and send regional winners to the "BBQ Sauce-Off" championship on May 18 in Birmingham.

The regional competitions will begin May 4 in downtown Montgomery at the Southern Makers Festival and in Mobile at the Market on the Square.  The following Saturday competitions will be held in Decatur at the Decatur/Morgan County Farmers Market and in Tuscaloosa at the Tuscaloosa River Market.

Alabama Tourism Department's Brian Jones said the Sauce-Off is a follow up to the popular BBQ Bracket contest on Facebook that state tourism did last month. "We had more than 81,000 votes cast on our Alabama Food Facebook page with Jim ‘N Nick's ending up as our state winner. The BBQ Bracket was like a hit movie and the Sauce-Off is our sequel," Jones said.

Get rid of prescription drugs at national take back event April 27

The Cullman Police Department will participate in the National Drug Take Back 2013 event.

Officers will take back unused or expired prescription drugs, no questions asked, Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

At last year's event, 488,395 pounds of prescription medications were collected at more than 5,000 take back sites across the U.S.

The most common ways of getting rid of prescription drugs--throwing them away or flushing them down the toilet--are considered unsafe. The Partnership for a Drug Free America estimates that every day 2,500 teenagers use prescription drugs, most often found in a home medicine cabinet, to get high for the first time. The National Take Back Day seeks to prevent the availability of those unused prescription drugs in the home.

Residents can drop of their medications at the following locations:

601 2nd Avenue NE, Cullman

Wallace State Theatre presents "You Can't Take it with You"

HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Chaos ensues when Alice Sycamore brings a young suitor home to meet her eccentric family.

That’s the setting for Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman’s 1937 Pulitzer-Prize winning play, “You Can’t Take It with You,” being staged by the Wallace State Theatre Department this week.

If the Sycamore family seems mad, it is not long before we realize that if they are mad, the rest of the world is madder in this quick-witted and timeless screwball comedy about a crazy, dysfunctional family.

Director Lauren Cantrell-Salerno said, "'You Can't Take it With You' is a charming play about living life to the fullest. The cast and crew have worked very hard on this production, and I'm excited to share it with our community."

Five performances will be held in the Betty Leeth Haynes Theatre at the Wallace State Student Center through April 14 as follows:

Saturday, April 13, at 7 p.m.

Sunday, April 14, at 2 p.m.
