Cloudy, Mild, Shower

Cloudy, Mild, Shower

Mostly cloudy skies are in our forecast today along with a slight chance of a shower.  Temperatures look to be unseasonably mild with highs in the low 60s expected this afternoon.

Tonight look for increasing chances of shower activity with lows near 52-degrees.

Tuesday brings us our best chance of rainfall with this system as a cold front pushes our way.  Look for rain along with a slight chance of thunderstorms.

By Wednesday the front should be past our area and our skies are expected to clear through Thursday with cooler air in place too.

Friday, clouds should build back into our area with a chance of rain Friday night into Saturday and Sunday morning.

Cut back on housework: Your cleaning cheat-sheet

Cut back on housework: Your cleaning cheat-sheet

By Nancy Kalish

Feel like you never stop cleaning? A 2008 University of Michigan survey found that American women scrub their houses an astonishing average of 17 hours a week, and (no surprise) their spouses spend a lot less time with a sponge. The good news: "Such drudgery is totally unnecessary," says Jeff Bredenberg, author of How to Cheat at Cleaning: Time-Slashing Techniques to Cut Corners and Restore Your Sanity. Follow his tips to make short work of your housework.

Keep Dirt Outside

Establish a no-shoe rule inside your home, and you'll prevent all kinds of muck from ever touching your floors. Place a basket by the front door and ask everyone to deposit footwear there.

Cover up

UAB researchers say add a helmet to your tornado-preparation kit

UAB researchers say add a helmet to your tornado-preparation kit

From UAB Media Relations:

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Helmets may prevent injury or death for those caught in a tornado, say researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Injury Control Research Center. In a commentary posted online on its website, the research team suggests that any kind of safety helmet, from hard hats to football helmets to bike helmets, are an essential addition to an individual’s tornado-safety preparations.

“Head injuries are a major cause of tornado-related deaths in the United States,” said Scott Crawford, MPH, a research assistant at the ICRC and the commentary’s lead author. “Alabama is the nationwide leader in tornado-related deaths with 412 fatalities recorded since 1980, demonstrating the need for a readily available, low-cost intervention to reduce risk.”

Tax advice for tornado victims

With the new year underway, it'll be tax time
before you know it. And this year thousands of our neighbors will ask, "What do you do if your documents and receipts were blown away
in the tornado?"

If you had a home rebuilt or  have pictures of
destroyed items, tax experts recommend using that.

It's those documents Glenda Lamkin and her
mother are using this tax season.

"It was really just nothing but the
ground. so, everything was destroyed," said Lamkin. Everything, including her mother's tax
information.

"She lost everything because when the
house was blown away, everything went with it," said Lamkin.

They have insurance paperwork and receipts
from builders. But everything after that, Lamkin says,
"I guess we'll have to go with a taxpayer to prepare everything and find
out where she is going to go from there."

Year of Alabama Food highlights the tasty side of the state

Year of Alabama Food highlights the tasty side of the state

The Alabama Tourism Department launched a new website this week highlighting the best in everything Alabama food, and since I like to cook and love to eat, I wanted to share my thoughts on the campaign.

A video highlighting the campaign starts with the line: "When you think of Alabama food, you think of BBQ, fried chicken, grits; but you don't know the half of it!" While I would argue that those things are all pretty darn tasty here, I agree that there are so many different cuisines and foods available in Alabama beyond the traditional Southern food.

There is a restaurant directory that lets you explore eateries by city or cuisine; a regularly updated blog delves into culinary traditions and the minds of great Alabama cooks; and there's the well-known "100 dishes you should eat in Alabama before you die" list.
