Neighbors upset over new Cullman Christian School location

CULLMAN, AL (WBRC)- For the past year students and faculty at Cullman Christian School have been attending class at 7th Street Baptist Church. Their school was destroyed in the April 27th tornado. They thought they were on track on building a new school on Convent Road about a year ago, but concerned neighbors are opposing the move.

On Monday night, supporters of a new Cullman Christian school made it to Monday's city council meeting. The purpose was to request that the school become deannexed from the city's zoning regulations.

"When it was all said and done, we felt good about the property we were acquiring, that we were communicating with the neighborhood, that we were communicating with the city council," said Cullman Christian School Board Director, Chris Sawyer.

Southbound I-59 lanes in Bessemer to close for construction

Starting Monday, May 14 at 12:01 a.m. ALDOT will close the southbound lanes of I-59 from the Alabama Adventure Parkway exit to north of the CSX railroad overpass in Bessemer. ALDOT closed the northbound lanes along the same stretch of highway in April and have since reopened them to traffic.

The southbound lanes of I-59 will be shutdown for 1.7 miles from Exit 110 to north of the CSZ railroad overpass. I-459 will be designated as a detour route. The repaving project is rebuilding a 33-year-old stretch of the interstate with a method called rubblization, which uses the crushed original roadway as a base for the new asphalt lanes.

ALDOT officials have set a target of 35 days for the completion of the construction work. The repaving project on the northbound lanes had a 30-day target for completion and were able to be finished in only 26 days.
